Wastewater Disposal

The Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division (DWGWPD) is responsible for regulating wastewater that is discharged to the sub-surface (underground).

Indirect Discharge - The review and approval of wastewater systems designed to dispose of 6,500 gallons per day or greater of wastewater.

Underground Injection Control - The review and approval of wastewater systems designed to dispose of some non-sanitary wastes.

On-site Sewage Disposal (Regional Offices) -Wastewater systems with a design flow of less than 6,500 gallons per day that require a permit under the Wastewater System and Potable Water Supply Rules.

Municipal Delegation - The ability of a municipality to receive authorization to administer the permitting requirements of the Wastewater System and Potable Water Supply Rules.

Designer Licensing - Licensed individuals who design wastewater systems (nd potable water supplies) requiring a permit to comply with the Wastewater System and Potable Water Supply Rules.

Municipal Connections - The Regional Office reviews connections to, and extensions of, municipal sewer lines.

WW permit document search (Regional Offices) -  An electronic way to access many of the Wastewater System and Potable Water Supply permits issued by the Regional Offices.

 

The Watershed Management Division (WSMD) regulates wastewater that is discharged to surface water and industrial sources that discharge to municipal collection systems.

• Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certification

Some WSMD permitting programs go through a public comment process prior to making final determination on an application. Public notices, fact sheets and draft permits/certifications for applications currently under consideration are available in PDF format and may be downloaded.

The above programs all have compliance and enforcement components as well as permit issuance responsibilities.

The WSMD also provides technical assistance and educational opportunities to wastewater treatment facility operators. In cooperation with State, regional and national organizations the WSMD support and/or co-sponsors opportunities that enhance the technical abilities of our regulated communities as well as our own engineering staff.
